Cosmic — 3 museum-grade prints that set the mood. Nataraja — Shiva as Lord of the Dance — performs the Ananda Tandava, the dance through which the cosmos is created, sustained and dissolved; the ring of flame is the prabhamandala, the circle of the universe, and the trampled dwarf Apasmara is ignorance subdued. The four hands carry the damaru of creation, the fire of destruction, the gesture of fearlessness, and the sweep toward the raised foot of liberation. The Samudra Manthana, the churning of the ocean of milk, is one of the great cosmic episodes of the Puranas: devas and asuras together churn the sea to win amrita, the nectar of immortality, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope, while Vishnu takes the form of Kurma, the turtle, to bear the mountain on his back. From the churning rise many treasures and finally Dhanvantari with the pot of amrita. Vamana is the fifth avatar of Vishnu — the dwarf who comes to the generous demon-king Mahabali and asks for only three paces of land; granted them, he grows into the cosmic Trivikrama and in two strides covers earth and sky, placing his third step on Mahabali's own head to send him to the netherworld, granting him one annual return. That homecoming is Onam, Kerala's great festival, and Mahabali is remembered there with affection.
