The brief was the Onam legend's turning point, and it gave the panel its one bold piece of dynamism. Vamana the dwarf, granted three steps of land by the generous King Mahabali, grows into the cosmic Trivikrama and lifts one leg straight up to the sky to claim the heavens — so the composition makes that raised leg the strong upward diagonal of the whole image, the foot reaching the very top of the panel while the other foot stays planted on a lotus. The green body is the murals' sattvic register for Vishnu, and a red-and-ochre flame arch frames him. The story is anchored low: Mahabali kneels at the left pouring the water that seals his gift, attendants stand at the right, and a smiling sun and moon sit at the base to mark the worlds being measured. Painting Mahabali with dignity matters in Kerala, where Onam mourns and welcomes him back; the medium-light density keeps the ochre ground open so the great stride reads cleanly.

  • Natural-oak frame on a warm-white wall keeps the green figure and ochre ground warm
  • Hang in a puja room or hallway at eye level so the raised-leg stride reads upward
  • Pairs with onam-pookalam-family or onam-sadya-banana-leaf for an Onam-legend wall
  • Sits well beside vishnu-anantashayana or narasimha-fierce for a Vishnu-avatar trio
  • Avoid a strong green wall — it flattens the deity's green body
