Rank 28 centres the Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden-Kai — the land-based fighter Allied pilots called George and Japanese naval aviators regarded as the answer to Hellcats and Corsairs over the Philippines and Okinawa. Evolved from the N1K1 Kyofu floatplane programme, the Shiden-Kai paired a low-drag fuselage with a Nakajima Homare engine and four 20 mm cannon in a package that could hold its own in the desperate air battles of 1944–45. Homogeneous production proved difficult; landing-gear failures and engine troubles haunted early units, yet pilots who mastered the type reported handling that rivalled anything in the Pacific.
