The brief was to picture a raga rather than a person — Megh Malhar, the Mewar monsoon mood sung to summon the rains. Ragamala painting gives each melody a scene, so we split the page into a twin-register: the raga's emotion above, where a prince and lady dance under breaking storm clouds, and its music below, where the players actually make the sound. Mewar's flat red terrace and bold colour suit the upper drama, while the lower pavilion on lapis water gives the musicians their own calm stage. The peacocks and wheeling cranes aren't decoration — in the Megh Malhar iconography they are the creatures the rain raga stirs, so they belong in the scene as surely as the clouds.
