Raas Leela Rajput Miniature Print — Mewar Krishna-lila, the moonlit circle dance of Krishna and the gopis · collector edition A2

Krishna with every gopi at once, and not one of them feeling like second choice — the dance that bends the rules of arithmetic on purpose.

The brief was the miracle of the raas: on the autumn full-moon night Krishna multiplied himself so that each gopi danced with her own Krishna, and the picture has to make that simultaneity feel like a single turning wheel rather than a crowd. Mewar was the right school because its Udaipur and Nathdwara ateliers loved the flat hingul-red ground and the bold ring composition, and they painted the raas as a true medallion. So the composition is built as a border-medallion: a lapis-blue circle at the heart holds the central pair, a ring of dancing pairs wheels around it on the red ground, and the kadamba trees and full moon crown the top while a lotus pond bases the foot. The red is the night warmth, the blue circle the still centre. We kept the dancers large and clearly separated so the wheel reads as rhythm, not a tangle.

  • Natural-oak frame on a warm-white or cream wall lets the flat hingul-red ground and gold ghagras glow
  • Hang as a centrepiece at eye level — the circular composition pulls the eye to its still blue centre
  • Pairs with krishna-govardhan-lift, krishna-flute-yamuna and garba-night-circle for a Krishna and festival-dance grouping
  • Keep clear of strong red walls — the hingul-red ground wants a neutral backdrop to stay distinct
  • Black frame deepens the red and sharpens the ring of dancers for a more graphic hang
