The brief was a small lotus pond held inside one cusped arch, not a busy aquarium: two blossoms rising on stems, a wavy water line, and a pair of fish facing each other beneath it. We kept the fill near half so the geru ground reads as the still surface between the lines, the way a courtyard diagram leaves earth showing between strokes. The lotus rising from water and the pair of fish are both old Aipan signs of fertility and plenty — fish drawn facing inward, lotuses opening upward, the pond as a wish for abundance. The cusped arch is the frame the motif likes, a shrine-niche shape that gathers the scene without crowding it. White biswar on geru, no blue, no third colour — the water is all line.
