The brief was a pure lotus medallion and nothing competing with it: a dotted seed-head at the centre, a few rings of petals opening outward, and the corners given to single blossoms rather than more pattern. We kept the fill near half so the geru ground stays open between the petal rings, the way a courtyard floor breathes between the strokes of a hand-drawn diagram. The lotus is the central motif of Aipan vocabulary — purity rising from water, the seat of the auspicious — and a radial lotus is the simplest, oldest way Kumaoni women fill a chowki or shrine square. The scalloped arch border is the quiet frame the rite likes; the four corner blossoms answer the centre without crowding it. White biswar on geru, no third colour.
