Garba Night — the dance circle around the garbo lamp · contemporary × Pithora fusion print · Rathwa-Bhil folk art of Chhota Udepur, Gujarat

Nine nights of turning around one lamp — garba is already a circle around a centre, which is exactly how Pithora likes to think.

The translation problem turned out to be a gift: garba is a dance that circles a central lamp, and Pithora is a tradition that puts the sacred thing at the centre, so the garbo pillar simply took the place a deity would hold. A centred-circle layout let the women turn around it in a flat-coloured ring of swirling skirts and raised dandiya, the dance reading instantly from the geometry. The strings of festival bulbs overhead became a folk dot-and-dash garland rather than a photographed light-rope, keeping the night festive without breaking the grammar. Navratri is Gujarat's great nine-night festival, shared far beyond any one community, so it belongs on the wall beside the deity riders. The tractor, bus and cricket in the lower band keep the festival grounded in the village it happens in.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the garbo lamp and dance circle the focus
  • Hang where the centred circle can sit at eye level as a clear focal point
  • Pair with ganesh-visarjan or holi-colour-throw for a Pithora festival wall
  • Sits well in a family room or diaspora hallway where Navratri carries memory
  • Slim black frame echoes the black outlines in a room with dark wood
