Designed by Émile Dewoitine against a 1936 specification, the D.520 combined retractable landing gear, self-sealing tanks, and manoeuvrability that let GC I/3 pilots claim kills against Luftwaffe Bf 109s during the Battle of France. Nationalization into SNCAM slowed production; fewer than three hundred reached front-line units before June 1940, yet the type continued in Vichy and Free French service and equipped the Normandie-Niémen regiment on the Eastern Front.
