The brief was movement done the Marwar way: chaugan — the mounted mallet game that is polo's ancestor and was a favourite Jodhpur court sport — caught at the instant the riders converge. Marwar fits both for its love of horses and for its taste for diagonal action, so the four players sweep across the field on a diagonal rather than lining up flat, their mallets all swinging toward one tiny ball. We kept the field a clean malachite-green plane and the cast to a handful of riders plus a few standing players and a terrace of spectators, so the energy reads clearly instead of dissolving into a scrum. The Jodhpur palace skyline and ochre hills behind place it firmly in Marwar, while the little lotus pond at the foot gives the eye somewhere calm to land.
