The Badva Divining — the priest-diviner reading the offering · contemporary × Pithora fusion print · Rathwa-Bhil folk art of Chhota Udepur, Gujarat

Before a Pithora can be painted, someone has to name the vow — so here the badva sits at the very centre, reading the grain while the smoke does the talking.

The brief was to make the divination itself the subject: not the finished wall, but the moment the badva reads the offering and tells the household what it owes the gods. Central-deity symmetry put the seated diviner dead-centre with the spread of grain and pots before him and devotees kneeling in mirrored pairs, so the eye lands first on the rite and the rising incense smoke. Among the Rathwa the badva is the ritual specialist whose chant guides the Lakhara's hand — the painting answers a vow the badva has named — so giving him the centre is true to how a Pithora actually begins. The lower band keeps modern village life small and ordinary — a bus, a tractor, children at cricket — so the sacred reading stays the loudest thing on the wall.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the central diviner and rising smoke calm and readable
  • Hang at eye level so the badva meets the viewer; the lower village band rewards a closer look
  • Pair with bhopa-narration or lakhara-painter-ritual for a Pithora ritual-people triptych
  • Sits well in a study or meditation corner where a single human rite anchors the wall
  • Slim black frame echoes the black outlines in a room with dark wood
