Intense Calm — 2 museum-grade prints that set the mood. Mata ni Pachedi means 'the cloth of the Mother Goddess' — a shrine textile of the Vaghri / Devipujak community of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, who, historically barred from temples, painted the Goddess on cloth to create their own portable shrine. Chamunda Mata, the fierce slayer-goddess with a major hill shrine at Chotila, is invoked on these cloths in her victorious form over the buffalo-demon. Ragamala ('garland of ragas') painting personifies the musical modes as figures and scenes; Dipak, the 'lamp' raga, is a fire-mode of legendary potency — the tale of the singer Tansen kindling lamps by performing it is part of its lore — and is conventionally shown as a prince among many lamps on a night terrace. This treatment follows the Marwar school centred on Jodhpur, known within the Rajput miniature umbrella for deep night grounds and desert-court intensity.
