Chamunda Mata over the Buffalo-Demon — Mata ni Pachedi shrine-cloth art print · the fierce slayer-goddess of Chotila with her skull garland, on the lion above the fallen demon · madder-red, iron-black, cream cotton · collector edition

The skulls are drawn in the cream itself — Chamunda's garland is the bare cloth showing through, victory without a drop of extra dye.

The brief was to hold Chamunda's fierceness inside the calm three-tone discipline, so her power is signalled by the long garland of skulls and the small prone buffalo-demon beneath her lion, not by clutter or extra colour. Cleverly, the skulls are left as reserved cream — the bare cloth read as bone — so even her most terrifying attribute stays within the limited palette. A flame-rayed halo crowns her, and the lamp-flame border picks up that same flame rhythm. The Vaghri (Devipujak) community of Ahmedabad and the Chotila hill country, long kept from temple sanctums, painted the Mother onto cloth to carry their shrine with them. Rust-red, iron-rust black, undyed cream: nothing else, because the limited natural-dye triad is the entire discipline.

  • Natural-oak or black frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the rust ground warm and the skull garland crisp
  • Hang above a puja nook at eye level so the fierce centre and the fallen demon read together
  • Pairs with amba-lion-enthroned for two lion-mounted goddesses in the same three tones
  • Group with vihat-tiger-enthroned and lion-vahana-study for a fierce-mount shrine wall
  • Avoid placing beside strong blues or greens — the three-tone discipline reads best against neutral plaster
