This is the one overtly devotional piece in the set, and it stays true to Gond's own pantheon rather than borrowing one: Thakur Dev, the guardian spirit of the Gond village and its fields. The brief was a frontal, symmetrical icon with the dignity of a shrine figure but the grammar of the forest — so the deity wears buffalo-style horns and a petal-crown, holds a sun-disc in one hand and a flowering, fruiting branch in the other, signs of light and abundance. Two deer mirror at the feet and two birds at the corners hold the symmetry, because in Gond cosmology the protector is never separate from the creatures he watches over. The body is filled with fine dash-rows, the deer with dot-stripes, the crown with dot-rows. Keeping it medium-light lets the figure read as calm authority on the breathing green ground, not a crowded altar.

  • Forest-green ground sits well on cream, clay or sage walls — let the dark ground breathe around the figure
  • Pair with a Gond tree or animal piece such as mahua-tree-of-life or standing-deer-icon at matching A2 for a guardian-and-forest set
  • Natural-oak frame warms the vermilion torso and marigold crown; black frame echoes the lampblack outline and the dark ground
  • Hang at eye level in a puja-adjacent nook, meditation corner or entryway where a guardian figure sets the tone
