DESIGN BRIEF: the brief was to draw a trance, which is an inner state, in a flat folk line that has no faces to work with. We put the kuranmaran dead centre under the ritual-ikon-frame symmetry and gave him the one liberty Saura grammar allows for ecstasy — flared hair-rays radiating from a rounded faceless head, both arms flung up, knees bent deep, a fire pot set right beneath him as the anchor. A seated drummer with a barrel drum and a standing flute player frame the rhythm; the worshippers crouch inward so the eye reads one rite rather than a crowd. We held the fill medium-light, kept the fish-net open and airy, and refused colour, faces, and perspective depth — the possession reads through posture and the radiating hair alone. The customary top band of sun, moon, tree, horse and elephant grounds the scene in real Lanjia Saura wall convention.
