The Ploughing — the farmer and his bullock pair at the plough · classical Pithora ritual-mural print · Rathwa-Bhil folk art of Chhota Udepur, Gujarat

The first cut of the season is not a sword but a plough — one farmer, two bullocks, the field opened so the women can sow behind.

The brief was the act that starts the whole agrarian year: the ploughing, the turning of the soil before anything else can grow. A scatter-village layout put the plough team at the centre — a farmer leaning into the handle, a pair of yoked white-and-red bullocks straining forward, two women following to drop seed — so the work reads as a sequence, not a still. For the agrarian Rathwa, the bullock and the plough are the engine of survival and a constant of the wall, so giving the team the centre is true to what the household lives by. The cattle, goats, shrine and well around them place the ploughing inside the full cycle of the farm. Medium-light fill keeps the bullocks' yoke, the plough and the sowing women each distinct.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the plough team and cattle readable
  • Hang in a kitchen-diner or study where the land and its work belong
  • Pair with cattle-grazing-herd or grain-grinding-women for a Pithora harvest-life wall
  • Sits well in a living room beside other earthy, agrarian pieces
  • Slim black frame echoes the black outlines in a room with dark wood
