Grazing Herd — the village cattle at pasture · classical Pithora ritual-mural print · Rathwa-Bhil folk art of Chhota Udepur, Gujarat

Count the cattle and you count the household's wealth — so this herd gets the widest band on the wall, each beast a different colour so none gets lost in the count.

The brief here was abundance kept legible: a herd big enough to read as wealth, but spaced so each animal stays its own creature rather than a smear of livestock. A scatter-village layout across a wide central band let the cattle breathe — a red bull, a blue bull, a turmeric cow, a white and a black one, goats threaded between — with herders and small trees giving the eye places to rest. Among the agrarian Rathwa, cattle are the measure of a family's standing and a constant of the painted wall, so giving the herd the broadest register is true to what the household actually treasures. Medium-light fill keeps the count honest; you can pick out the spotted bullock and the goat with her kid without squinting.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the multi-coloured herd reading clearly
  • Hang where the wide cattle band can stretch — above a sideboard or a child's low shelf
  • Pair with harvest-plough-cattle or toddy-tree-tapper for a Pithora harvest-and-cattle wall
  • Sits well in a child's room or kitchen-diner where the colourful animals bring cheer
  • Slim black frame echoes the black outlines in a room with dark wood
