Phag in Vrindavan — the spring when even the trees seem to throw colour, raining red blossom on the dance.

The brief was the classical phag: Krishna and the gopis playing Holi under the blossoming trees of spring, drawn in pichwai's twin-mirror symmetry so the colour-play folds gracefully down the centre. We let two great red-flowering trees arch over the scene and rain petals, so the season throws colour as much as the dancers do, with the pink pichkari sprays kept flat and folk rather than splattered. Two resting white cows and a lotus pond hold the base, grounding the festival in Krishna's cowherd Vrindavan. The cream ground keeps the rose and red singing. Holi is a major festival of the Pushtimarg seva calendar at Nathdwara, and phag is its most lyrical form.
