The brief was the kamal-talai, the lotus tank that every Nathdwara pichwai keeps as its band of water, here promoted to the entire field. We stood a flute Krishna on a single open lotus with a white cow at his side, then filled the dark water around them with blooming and budding lotuses, round pads, fish and ducks so the pond itself becomes the subject. The deep indigo ground reads as still temple water and makes the rose-pink lotuses glow, while the fish and ducks keep it a living tank rather than a pattern. It is the most secular and the most beloved of pichwai motifs — the lotus pond as the sign of divine presence and the temple's own kamal-talai.
