The brief made the garbo the heart of the cloth: the perforated earthen lamp-pot stands on its pedestal directly below the goddess, pierced holes drawn as small circles and a halo of straight rays radiating out, so the light seems to leak from every opening. Women bearing pots ring it on both sides in radial-shrine symmetry, the way they circle the real garbo at Navaratri. The Vaghri (Devipujak) community of Gujarat, long kept from temple sanctums, painted the Mother onto cloth to carry their shrine with them; the garbo, lit through the nine nights, embodies the womb of the Goddess and the life she holds. Deep-maroon red, iron-rust black, undyed cream: nothing else, because the limited natural-dye triad is the entire discipline.
