When VFA-41 traded Tomcats for Super Hornets in December 2001, they became the Navy's first operational F/A-18F squadron, keeping a lineage that runs from Banshees and Demons through Phantoms and F-14s on the West Coast carrier circuit. The F-model adds a weapon-systems officer in the back seat, AN/APG-79 AESA radar up front, and the payload to cover fleet air defense, precision strike, and close air support from CVW-9 decks.
