The translation problem was giving an everyday kindness sacred weight: the chabutaro, the communal bird-feeding tower of Gujarat, is drawn vertical-bilateral and crowned with a bell-hung arch, taking the central, symmetrical place a goddess or kalash usually holds. Birds throng its tiers and wheel around it in flat line, while an old man scatters grain below — the small daily act the tower exists for. The Vaghri (Devipujak) community of Gujarat, long kept from temple sanctums, painted the Mother onto cloth to carry their shrine with them; the chabutaro feeds the sparrows as a daily act of compassion, a kind of worship without a deity in the frame. Alizarin red, iron-rust black, undyed cream: nothing else, because the limited natural-dye triad is the entire discipline.
