The Pol Courtyard — Mata ni Pachedi shrine cloth · an old Ahmedabad pol house with a carved balcony, a courtyard swing, a bird-feeder well and family at work, in madder red on cream cotton

A whole Ahmedabad household folded flat onto cloth — the carved balcony up top, the swing creaking in the courtyard, the birds at the well.

The brief was to fit an old-city pol house — the dense, carved courtyard homes of Ahmedabad — into the flat shrine-cloth idiom, which refuses perspective. So the facade is drawn as a symmetrical flattened elevation: a carved wooden balcony with turned balusters bands the upper storey, figures lean from the windows, and the courtyard opens below where two women sit on a hanging jhula with a child between them, beside a well ringed with pecking birds and a potted tulsi. The architecture itself becomes the cloth's frame, the way a temple arch frames a goddess. Mata ni Pachedi has always ringed the Mother with community life, and a pol courtyard is where that life actually happens — the swing, the well, the cooking, the chatter from the balcony — so the household stands in for the shrine's surround. Panels of grinding, sweeping, cooking and eating ring it, and a floral border closes it. Madder red, iron-black, cream, nothing more.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the madder red true and the carved-balcony lattice reading clearly
  • Hang in a living room or entryway where the household scene invites a closer look
  • Pairs with stepwell-water-women and chabutaro-bird-feeder for a heritage-Ahmedabad grouping
  • Suits anyone with roots in Ahmedabad's old city; keep adjacent decor low-chroma
  • Black frame echoes the iron-rust facade line and floral border in dark-wood rooms
