Launched 14 November 1969 aboard Saturn V SA-507, Pete Conrad, Richard Gordon, and Alan Bean survived two lightning strikes 36 seconds after liftoff when flight controller John Aaron's call to reset the SCE to AUX restored telemetry before the stack cleared the tower. Intrepid LM landed 19 November in the Ocean of Storms within walking distance of Surveyor 3, the unmanned probe that had soft-landed in April 1967 — the first precision lunar touchdown and the first time humans visited hardware they had sent ahead. Conrad and Bean conducted two EVAs totalling 7 h 45 m, deployed ALSEP, collected 34 kg of samples, and removed Surveyor 3's camera for return to Earth. Yankee Clipper splashed down 24 November.
