Launched 31 January 1971 aboard Saturn V SA-509 after a four-month delay, Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa targeted the Fra Mauro highlands originally assigned to Apollo 13. Antares LM landed 5 February; Shepard and Mitchell conducted two EVAs totalling 9 h 23 m, deploying ALSEP, collecting 42 kg of samples, and approaching Cone Crater's rim on foot with the MET equipment cart — covering 4.7 km across highland boulders. Shepard, age 47, became the oldest person to walk on the Moon and famously hit two golf balls with a makeshift six-iron. Roosa orbited solo in Kitty Hawk, conducting extensive lunar photography.
