Mewar, ruled from Udaipur, is the Rajput school of bold flat saturated grounds — its red ground is a signature, and its raas circles radiate around a central figure. This contemporary fusion borrows that radial-raas grammar for garba, the Navratri circle dance of Gujarat and Rajasthan performed around a lamp or earthen pot through nine nights honouring the goddess. Marwar, the desert court of Jodhpur and Nagaur, is the Rajput school of intense saturated grounds and lively court entertainments. This contemporary fusion borrows its performance grammar for kathputli, the Rajasthani string-puppet theatre traditionally performed by the Bhat community, whose carved-and-painted marionettes act out tales of kings, queens and folk heroes to dholak and a reed whistle. The Kotah and Bundi ateliers of southeastern Rajasthan share a school and are jointly celebrated for hunting scenes — dramatic shikar chases through dense, lovingly painted jungle, a genre the Kotah workshops in particular made their signature. The royal tiger hunt was both a sport and a display of princely prowess.
