Jacques Laffite embodied French Formula One between the Prost generation and the Ligier-Matra nostalgia wave — a six-time winner who never claimed a world title yet held the Grand Prix starts record until Riccardo Patrese surpassed it. His elf-backed JS11 era paired with Patrick Depailler and later Jacques' own team-management chapter at Ligier kept French blue on the grid through the ground-effect revolution. The Peugeot 206 WRC marked France's return to WRC manufacturers dominance after the Group B era — a factory program that bet on compact hatch agility and Finnish driver talent over silhouette excess. Marcus Gronholm's 2000 and 2002 drivers titles and Peugeot's manufacturers crowns validated the 206 platform against Subaru, Ford, and Mitsubishi factory entries.
