The Oldsmobile 442 was introduced as a performance package in 1964 and became a standalone model in 1968, running until 1980 with periodic gaps. The 442 name originally denoted 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed transmission, and 2 exhausts. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was created in response to the SCCA Trans-Am racing series maximum 305 cubic-inch engine displacement rule. The production car debuted in 1967 with the 302 CU IN combination and won the Trans-Am championship in 1968 and 1969, driven by Mark Donohue and Penske Racing.
