The brief was to draw the ghotul honestly as a gathering, not a spectacle. The ghotul is the youth dormitory of the Muria Gond — a communal night-space where unmarried young people meet to sing, drum, talk and learn the rhythms of adult life — so the composition had to be a circle around a fire, with the dormitory itself as the backdrop. We set the thatched hut up top, the two musicians at the back of the ring, and let the seated youths complete the circle around a concentric-ring fire that reads as flame without any glow effect. A roundel moon, a single bird and a leaning tree fix the night. Kept medium-light, the deep maroon-black ground does the work of darkness while the fire and the clothing carry the warmth.
