This is the Kalighat babu at full satirical scale: the leisured, Anglicised landlord's son grown soft on rent, reclining with the three props the patuas pinned on him — the hookah, the gold pocket-watch, and the curled-toe slippers. We set him on a diagonal sweep so his bulk slides across the sheet and the watch dangles at the picture's pivot, idle time made literal. The slate-grey panjabi carries red embroidered trim and a little flourish at the chest pocket; we kept everything else plain so the joke is the man and his expensive idleness, not the furniture. Boneless shading swells every fold of him — the patuas modelled the dandy's paunch with exactly this affectionate exaggeration.
