Space Shuttle STS-1 Poster — 1981 Columbia OV-102 NASA Heritage Collector Print

Bold test flight without an unmanned dress rehearsal — STS-1 earns rank-thirty-three Heritage treatment because John Young and Bob Crippen rode Columbia into orbit on faith, tiles, and three space shuttle main engines that would define thirty years of American spaceflight.

Rank 33 opens the reusable-spaceflight chapter with STS-1 — the April 1981 maiden orbital flight of Space Shuttle Columbia OV-102, commanded by veteran John Young with rookie Bob Crippen as pilot. Unlike every prior human-rated debut, Columbia launched crew on its first orbital attempt — a 54-hour, 36-orbit proof that winged reentry and runway landing could follow solid-rocket and main-engine ascent. The 74,865 kg orbiter carried high-temperature reusable surface insulation tiles that became the shuttle's signature engineering gamble. Young and Crippen landed at Edwards Air Force Base on 14 April 1981, inaugurating a program that would fly 135 missions until Atlantis closed the era in 2011. Heritage Collector renders Columbia's launch plume and Edwards landing profile in split-field composition exactly as the master PNG dictates.

  • Black frame on warm white walls — shuttle white and SRB orange stay true without overpowering neutral upholstery
  • Pair with STS-135 Final or Hubble Servicing prints at matching A2 for shuttle program bookends
  • Hang above a credenza at eye level; the launch plume and landing profile read best with half a metre stand-off
  • Natural-oak frame suits garage walls where stone paper echoes wood tones beside aviation memorabilia
  • Stack A3 beside Saturn V Apollo for expendable-vs-reusable launch vehicle contrast
  • Deep navy accent wall behind the plate lets the orange 1981 numeral pop without competing worm logo red
