The ~20 metre cylinder with four solar arrays and a forward docking port hosted Soyuz 10's failed docking attempt and Soyuz 11's successful 23-day stay by Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev — who conducted astrophysics and Earth-observation work before a cabin vent valve failure on reentry ended their lives. Salyut 1 pioneered the station-plus-ferry architecture that Mir and ISS would refine across decades.
