Ritual Dancers Before the Shrine — Mata ni Pachedi shrine-cloth art print · a whirling row of skirted dancers honouring the goddess on her cockerel · madder-red, iron-black, warm cream cotton · collector edition

The skirts do the talking at the bottom — a whole row caught mid-whirl, dancing the goddess awake in the arch above.

The brief handed the dancers the base of the cloth: a full-width row of skirted figures caught mid-whirl, arms up and hems flared into swirl-lines, with the goddess seated calm on her cockerel in the arch above as the one they move for. The contrast of stillness above and motion below is the whole composition. The Vaghri (Devipujak) community of Gujarat, long kept from temple sanctums, painted the Mother onto cloth to carry their shrine with them, and dancers whirl before that very cloth to honour her at festival. Brick-red, iron-rust black, undyed cream: nothing else, because the limited natural-dye triad is the entire discipline.

  • Natural-oak frame on cream or warm-white walls keeps the cream ground warm and the brick red lively
  • Hang at eye level so the whirling dancer row reads as movement across the base
  • Pairs with dhol-drummer-panel and nagada-trumpet-procession for a festival-music-and-dance wall
  • Group with garba-circle-night and dandiya-raas-pairs for a Navaratri dance set
  • Avoid placing beside strong blues or greens — the three-tone discipline reads best against neutral plaster
