The Porsche 928 was introduced in 1977 as the car Porsche's engineers believed should replace the 911 — a water-cooled, front-engined V8 GT with a rear transaxle for perfect weight distribution, a glassy hatchback body, and a cabin that married Stuttgart precision to limousine comfort. It won the European Car of the Year award in 1978, the first and only sports car to do so.
