DESIGN BRIEF: the subject was the everyday miracle of a whole family balanced on one bike, and the trick was to draw it with affection rather than slapstick. The motorcycle is built like a mount — two big ringed black wheels, an outlined body, dotted exhaust puffs trailing — and the family sits on it the way the deity riders sit their horses in the register above, so the bike takes its place in the procession of the wall. At medium-light density the family holds the centre while a bus and a blue tractor carry the same flat treatment along the base. Among the Rathwa of Chhota Udepur the family bike is simply how a household travels now; setting it beneath the horses that carry the gods is the fusion's warm point — the village procession has a two-wheeler in it.
