The Milkmaid — Kalighat-style art print of a woman carrying milk pots in a saffron saree, Bengal patua brush · collector edition · framed A2

Two pots, one balance, and a walk so practised the patua could draw the whole rhythm in a single sweeping line.

We briefed this as a classical Kalighat genre figure rather than a satire — the patuas of 19th-century Calcutta painted working women as readily as they painted Kali, and the milkmaid is one of their cleanest exercises in line and balance. Everything hangs on the diagonal of her body: the raised right arm steadying the heavy pot on her head, the lowered left hand letting a smaller pot swing, the saree catching mid-stride so the walk itself reads as movement on a still sheet. We chose a profile pose because that is how Kalighat carries motion — the bold black contour does the work, and the boneless shading only rounds the arms, the bellied pots and the folds of the saffron cloth. The palette is deliberately warm and plain: saffron with a brick-red border, ochre skin, and slate-grey pots, with silver bangles and a pearl string as the patua's small note of ornament. No street, no cattle, no clutter — just the figure, the pots and the quiet ground.

  • Natural-oak frame on a warm-white wall lets the saffron saree and brick-red border glow against the cream ground
  • Hang in a kitchen-adjacent nook or dining room as a calm classical counterpoint to the satirical Kalighat pieces
  • Pairs with fishwife-basket or woman-mirror for a wall of classical Kalighat women
  • Give the empty paper room to breathe — the calm cream ground is part of the Kalighat look
  • White frame keeps the warm palette quiet in a bright dining room
