We briefed this as the gram-than, the sarna grove: the uncut stand of sal that every plateau village keeps as the home of its deity, where the pahan priest makes the offerings. A grove is a place, hard to hold in Khovar's clean grammar, so we collapsed it into one towering vertical-axis tree-of-life — trunk dead-centre, combed crown filling the upper half — with the deity-stones gathered at the foot and the priest kneeling small beside them. Keeping the human figure small under the great tree is the whole reverence of the scene; the deer, bull, peacock and hen around the base are the grove's living congregation. The two-tone lets the dark ground behave like forest shade between the leaf clusters.
