This is the one fusion piece in the set where the subject is the craft itself, so we briefed it as a horizontal-frieze of household women at work on the bridal wall. Khovar is combed by the women of the household onto the nuptial room before a wedding, and we wanted that labour visible: one woman raises a broken comb, one kneels mid-stroke, one steadies the design, while the great peacock they are drawing fans out between them. The harder call was to keep the painters in the same kaolin-line grammar as the peacock they paint — no 'photographic' artist dropped into folk surroundings — so maker and motif read as one wall. The row of earthen kaolin pots at their feet is the literal evidence of the slip they are combing away.
