We briefed the Puri triad with reverence for its strange, unforgettable form: the great round eyes, the stumped log-arms, the abstracted faces that no naturalism would ever improve. A centred-frontal row sets white Balabhadra, golden Subhadra and black Jagannath shoulder to shoulder, Subhadra smaller between her brothers exactly as the temple holds them. The crowns rise in tiered blue and gold, the robes fall brick-red with garlands of white and gold. We kept the patua palette honest and the ground plain so the six huge eyes do what they are meant to — hold the viewer steady. The boneless brush softens the robes while leaving the signature faces flat and frontal, as the form demands.
