A scatter-village layout let each archer face his own quarry — a wild boar here, a deer there, a leaping leopard, a darting hare — with small trees breaking the field so the eye keeps moving the way the hunt does. For the Rathwa and Bhil, who are forest people, the hunt and the woods are not exotic but home, an old subject the painted wall has always carried alongside the gods.
