Spirit (MER-A) landed in Gusev Crater on 3 January 2004 as one of NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers, carrying a suite of cameras and spectrometers to investigate past water activity. The rover far exceeded its 90-sol design life, climbing into the Columbia Hills and discovering silica-rich deposits suggestive of hydrothermal activity. Opportunity (MER-B) landed at Meridiani Planum on 25 January 2004, three weeks after its twin Spirit. The rover discovered hematite-rich concretions ('blueberries') that provided strong evidence for past liquid water.
