LRO has operated since 2009 as NASA's primary lunar mapping asset, imaging every Apollo landing site and delivering the high-resolution charts that enable Artemis south-pole landing site selection. Its discovery of permanently shadowed regions with water-ice signatures reframed the Moon from a finished chapter of exploration into an active resource frontier. Luna 9 soft-landed in Oceanus Procellarum on 3 February 1966 — the first spacecraft to survive lunar touchdown and transmit images from the surface. The four-petal inflatable lander design became an icon of Soviet lunar engineering and preceded NASA's Surveyor 1 soft landing by four months. Apollo 10 was the mission that made Apollo 11 possible — every critical sequence from lunar orbit insertion through LM separation, descent, ascent, and rendezvous was exercised over the Moon except the final landing burn. Stafford and Cernan reported the lunar surface up close; Young held Charlie Brown in orbit.
