Mariner 9 transformed Mars from a blurry disc into a mapped world — revealing Olympus Mons as the solar system's largest volcano and discovering the canyon system that bears the Mariner name. Arriving during a global dust storm that also affected Soviet Mars 2 and Mars 3 missions, Mariner 9 demonstrated orbital patience: controllers waited months for skies to clear before systematic imaging began.
